Because reward training is so effective, it's currently one of the most popular dog training techniques. At its heart, reward training works because you reward your dog with a treat or tidbit of food whenever he does what you ask. Most owners accompany the food reward with verbal praise. The food and praise are positive reinforcement which helps your dog learn to associate the action he performed with good things (food and praise) and encourages him to repeat that behavior again.
The intermediate training generally lasts up to 10 weeks, and is intended for dogs that are 5 months or older. Some professionals feel it is essential for participating dogs to have completed the basic training course to get the most out of this training, should your dog not be used to the basic training or commands not only will it hold his training back, but it could put him off further training. So it is important that your dog has become accustomed to the basic commands and understands what is expected of him.
Leash and Harness. One of the more commonly known dog training aids is the harness. A harness is a tool you fit around a dog's upper body that is most effective in teaching him to heel. With this tool, you can easily control your dog, since even with the slightest tug of the leash, it can pull your dog back to you with ease. This dog training aid is more commonly used for dogs that have difficulty restraining themselves during walks.
The saying may be true that dog is man's best friend, but many can attest to the fact that it doesn't always start out that way! The simple truth is, some dogs are more inclined than others to behave themselves. Regardless, all dogs need some form of training to improve their behavior patterns. Some dogs have the bad habit of tearing up the front yard, while others just can't seem to stay out of the garbage can. Still others appear as though they will never get housebroken. There are even dogs that never seem to take a liking to other human beings, always snarling, growling or even biting strangers and relatives alike. Nevertheless, no dog is beyond training if taught properly how to behave. Starting with dog training basics, dog training problems can be a thing of the past.
Obedience Training: Now I do not know about you, but I certainly was not born an expert in dog training. So here, I would say its advisable to try and attend some good obedience training classes. This is especially true, if you are a new dog owner or have never really had any professional advice from people that have been doing this on a daily basis. Of course everything you are taught at these classes can be used in your home training. These classes can provide a solid foundation for aspects such as, assuming the alpha position, house training, issuing commands and even managing your older more mature dogs. Once you have the basics there is a wealth of advice, products and knowledge out there from experts in their fields, which will empower you. It may cost a little, but I would rather be penny wise than pound foolish.
Teaching your dog to HEEL makes walks in your neighborhood a pleasant experience. I am sure you have seen or experienced the owner that gets walked by their dog. The owner is fearful of each approaching human or animal because they have not been trained to HEEL. Your goal is that your dog will stay close to you on a walk. He will not pull you or become too hard to control with the distractions of other dogs or humans. Start from SIT, add 'Let's Walk' so your dog knows what is expected after he has learned to HEEL. A good tip, exercise your dog with play before training to HEEL. Work out all excess energy and train your dog in a quiet distraction free area. Start at SIT, use your dogs name and command HEEL. If your dog does not stay with you and darts away, turn in the other direction and repeat command HEEL and dog's name. Remember to always to praise and treat desired responses.
Any dog that exhibits a bad personality doesn't need the situation compounded with your bad attitude. You need to remain calm and show patience and a positive reinforcement when your dog obeys your command. If you don't allow your impatience, anger or frustration to affect your training approach, you will strengthen his desire to respond to the training in a positive manner. He will be more inclined to listen than to resist your commands.
