The Sit Command – This is the most common and basic command to teach your dog and probably should be the first thing you teach him. Using a treat as a reward for good behavior works well for most training. You will need a leash attached to your dog's collar to hold him steady. Show your dog a treat that you have in your hand and hold it over his head causing him to look up, and then say ”Sit”. Sometimes, just by holding the treat over his head your dog will automatically sit. If he does not sit, place your other hand on your dog's rear and gently press down saying ”Sit”. Once he does sit, reward him immediately with the treat and praise him by saying ”Good Boy” in a happy voice and pet him vigorously showing him you are pleased with his response to your ”Sit” command. It's important to reward him immediately after he responds correctly, so he knows why he is receiving the reward.
Leash Training: If your dog is pulling your arm out of its socket every time you take him walkies, its time for proper leash training. You need to assume control of your dog when he is on the leash. Never allow your dog to get over excited when he sees the leash or becomes aware that you are going to take him for a walk. If necessary make your dog sit and stay whilst you go and open the door. Then come back, put on his leash, only if he has behaved and listened to your commands. Repetition is key here, if you want to be rid of his over zealous behavior. Also, as long as your dog is in this hyped up state he will not listen to any commands you may give him. Whilst walking your dog, you should always be in control. The dog should not be leading you around. By all means let the dog sniff about and so forth, but not throughout the whole walk. Also, if he does not refrain from pulling, then make him sit and stay next to your side until he understands that you are the Alpha Dog and are therefore in charge. The dog will soon come to understand that his walk will be stopped each time he pulls.
Because your goal is to train your dog to behave, the effort you put forth to accomplish this goal will be rewarded by a dog that is much more obedient than when you first started the training lessons. Instead of allowing your dog to frustrate you and possibly end up taking the dog to the pound or, even worse abandoning him, once you have made up your mind to be the master by applying proper dog training techniques to your misbehaving dog, you will be glad you did.
