All the best dog obedience training books stress positive conditioning techniques, and will teach you not only how to actually do the steps of each exercise(sit, stay, etc.), but also give you an understanding of why you are going about the training in this particular way by teaching you how your dog sees things. It is very eye opening to learn how differently dogs see the world than we do. The better you understand your dog's point of view and body language, the easier it will be for you to properly train your dog.
Toys. Toys can be effective dog training aids and used to redirect a number of behavior issues, such as teething, boredom and anxiety. When choosing toys for your dog, be sure they are safe in size and design. Buy toys at a pet store, as they are specifically made for dogs. Your kids' old stuffed animals and dolls are not great alternatives, as they may contain small buttons, pieces of plastic, or even glass parts you made not be aware of that can pose great danger to your dog. There are a number of dog training aids and methods available. Aside from the obvious benefits of teaching good behavior, dog training aids can make teaching tricks much easier and faster too.
Clicker Dog Training – While widely unknown to many dog parents, arguably one of the best dog training aids that works well with any breed of dog is the ”clicker.” If you have never heard of the term ”clicker training” before, you have most likely witnessed or heard of examples of this type of training. Skateboarding bulldogs, beer fetching retrievers, Babe the Pig, Beethoven. Sound familiar? Check any of these animal antics out, and you've been amazed by the effects of powerful clicker training and the best obedience training methods in action. The clicker is a small mechanical noisemaker that was developed in response to lead behaviorists' demands for more effective training methods. Aside from its effectiveness, unlike a number of other dog training aids, this form of dog obedience training is very gentle and offers a ”hands off” approach to pet training. What your dog actually learns is to associate the strong, sharp sound of the clicker, which can be heard as far as 20 yards away, with your given command.
The Lie Down Command – Once your dog has mastered the sit command, you can progress to the ”Lie Down” command. A treat is also used to accomplish this. First ask your dog to ”Sit”. Do not give him a treat for sitting. While he is in the sitting position you should have a treat in your hand and hold it in front of him, very close to the floor and say ”Lie Down”. If necessary place your other hand on your dogs shoulders and gently press down until your dog lies down or give him a gentle tug downward on his leash. Once your dog lies down, reward him immediately with a treat and say ”Good Boy” in a happy voice and pet him vigorously showing him you are pleased with his response to your ”Lie Down” command. The tone of your voice is important to let your pet know you are pleased with his response to your command.
Bring yourself into a training session committed to focusing on your dog to the same extent that you are asking him to focus on you. Avoid training when you are distracted or pre-occupied. This is basic respect and consideration, no more than you would give any good friend! To be attentive to your dog, you don't need to stare at him, but you should be aware of him. An effective trainer is aware, present, and ”in the moment” while training, ready and able to note and reward any and all good responses, as they happen. And if your dog gives a response you weren't hoping for? Instead of drawing attention to it, verbally or otherwise, ignore it and move on! Drawing attention to poor responses often simply cements them in the dog's brain, and makes it more likely that he will offer it again. Focus your energy and attention on behaviors you want to see again. As you practice this approach to working with your dog, you will soon find that your dog will be working to gain your attention by doing those things you like. As your dog's behavior steadily improves, voluntary cooperation increases, your relationship with your dog gets stronger, and you both have more fun training. Kind of hard to find a down-side to that, don't you think?
These training mistakes occur primarily because people try to communicate and train their dogs as if the dogs were human, instead of canines. We also tend to spoil our pets. Just like children, dogs need guidance to learn their place in the family and how to behave appropriately. If you haven't learned how to properly go about training your dog, it is only natural that you will have a variety of dog training problems.
Leash Training: If your dog is pulling your arm out of its socket every time you take him walkies, its time for proper leash training. You need to assume control of your dog when he is on the leash. Never allow your dog to get over excited when he sees the leash or becomes aware that you are going to take him for a walk. If necessary make your dog sit and stay whilst you go and open the door. Then come back, put on his leash, only if he has behaved and listened to your commands. Repetition is key here, if you want to be rid of his over zealous behavior. Also, as long as your dog is in this hyped up state he will not listen to any commands you may give him. Whilst walking your dog, you should always be in control. The dog should not be leading you around. By all means let the dog sniff about and so forth, but not throughout the whole walk. Also, if he does not refrain from pulling, then make him sit and stay next to your side until he understands that you are the Alpha Dog and are therefore in charge. The dog will soon come to understand that his walk will be stopped each time he pulls.
