In this day and age, you have a myriad options for training your dog available to you. In fact, the difficulty is more often deciding which approach will be the most effective in training your particular dog (and the method that will mesh the best with your particular situation). Now that you've decided that you're going to put the effort into training your dog and that the effort is worth the results you know you'll get, it is time to decide what kind of training program you will use.
DOWN command can be taught just after SIT is mastered. It is important to use only the word DOWN. Your dog does not understand variations such as Lay Down. You must be consistent in training your dog that DOWN only refers to laying down. If you want to teach your dog to get down off of your chair, train OFF as your command. To teach your dog to lay down, first command him to SIT. Using a treat, draw your dog into a laying down position by dragging the treat between his legs and moving it forward. When the desired position is reached, praise, and treat. As you train your dog each new command, be sure to combine each command so patterns do not develop and the action of each different command is rewarded when achieved. (SIT DOWN STAY), (SIT STAY COME), (SIT STAY DOWN)
Canine Good Citizen Training – The Canine Good Citizen training for dogs is the final course. In order to pass this course, your dog will be taught the 10 essential aspects. This course has strict entry criteria and is meant for those dogs and owners that have completed all the previous courses. The tests for this course are tough and your dog will only be passed if he is very well behaved. The length of this particular course depends on how quickly it takes your dog to be ready and passes the required tests. Bearing this information in mind should enable you to make an informed decision about what training course will be best for you and your dog. It may be worth your while to seek the opinion of a local professional trainer who may be able to help you with your decision. Most quality dog trainers will give you and your dog a first consultation for free.
