Dog grooming clippers can be found at pet specialty stores and some general retailers. A dog who has thick, long, or curly hair will be more difficult to groom at home. With these dogs, expect your grooming to be more utilitarian than chic. But grooming your dog at home can benefit more than just your wallet. Some dogs are afraid of groomers and find the experience very stressful. Grooming these dogs at home should be easier on a high-strung dog or one who is easily intimidated.
Different breeds – different coats. Smooth coated dogs such as Boxers and Whippets are the easiest to look after when it comes to dog grooming. Use a chamois, hound glove or a soft bristle brush. Those that have a denser coat with an undercoat – such as Labradors – need more grooming as they moult a lot more – as anyone with a Lab will tell you! Use a bristle brush for them, and finish off with a comb paying particular attention to the tail and neck where the hair is thickest. Treat wiry coated dogs in the same way, but with these you will also need to have the longer hair 'stripped' once a month using a stripping comb. You will also need to take these breeds – Wire-haired Dachshunds and Fox Terriers for example – to a professional groomer about 3 or 4 times a year to have the coat reduced.
All-breed dog grooming is typically for professionals only. Normal dog owners are interested mainly about methods to groom their own animal's breed, and that is totally natural. But classes and certifications are required to acquire qualification for all-breed dog grooming. Through the years, many schools have been founded and accreditation can now be obtained on the web also, as part of long-distance certification programs. Should you opt for this alternative, make sure that the the instructor has a license for organizing lessons.
