Generally, the more a dog eats the more water it needs. Don't be surprised if your dog drinks a lot in one day and less in another. If there is more water in the food, the dog needs to drink less. That is why dogs eating canned food usually do not spend as much time at the water bowl. Canned food contains about 75 percent water and dry food has about 8 percent to 10 per cent. However with all the scary dog food recall in 2007 and it is still happening today since there is no regulation that makes it compulsory for commercial dog food manufacturers to recall their pet food. So it is better to be equipped with recent knowledge and dog experts' advice regarding feeding your dog with usual commercial dog food.
If the dead dogs included in dog food had cancerous tumors or contagious diseases, it doesn't matter. They are still sent to the rendering factory. If the dead dogs had been treated with powerful antibiodics and other strong medications, these are included in the vat at the rendering plant. If the dog was wearing a chain around its neck, had surgical pins containing heavy metals inserted, had a flea collar on, it doesn't matter. Nothing is removed. It is all just dumped in with the rest, mechanically chopped up, heated to very high temperatures, and turned into dog food and other products like cosmetics. If the dog died of mad cow disease, the dog would still be picked up by the rendering plants because vets don't even call it mad cow disease. Instead, they euphemistically call it ”Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS).” The FDA is in complete denial on this subject.
There is a high percentage of dogs that have food allergies. Corn is such a common additive, that some feel its constant inclusion with dog food has made it a regular culprit for dog food allergies. Soy is another culprit. Some feel that the number of dogs with food allergies may be as high as twenty percent, others ground the figure somewhere well below ten percent. Whatever the case may be, dog food companies have created hundreds if not thousands of different foods for dogs that should meet your dog's needs, even if he does have allergies. Obviously, a well balanced, meat-only diet would hit all of the required amino acid marks, and avoid potential grain allergies. Meat allergies however, are another reality that make the whole idea of dog food protein that much more complex.
