The Alpha Position: Every domesticated dog needs to be trained in this area. By no means should your dog be allowed to assume this role in your home or outdoors for that matter. Dogs do not speak, they bark, except for the Basenji breed of course, so do not assume dogs understand human language. Ultimately your dog needs to know that you are in charge and as such, your dog can relax, knowing that you will protect him. I know this sounds strange, as many of us assume the dog is there to protect us. Make no error, your dog will certainly ”come to the party” when his pack or any one of its members is under threat. This serves to re-enforce the concept of establishing the pack roles so that your dog knows exactly who is in and who is not.
Private Training – This type of training involves paying an hourly rate for one-on-one with a professional dog trainer at some sort of training facility (or perhaps in your home for a higher price rate). This can be an extremely effective method of training your dog. Because you are there with your dog, you are shown exactly what movements and actions to take and your dog benefits from a professional hand. However, this training is easily the most expensive, because professional trainers often charge 20, 40, or even up to 100 dollars an hour for their expertise. In addition, if you don't find a trainer who is knowledgeable enough to deal with all of your dog's tendencies or if you simply don't ”click” with your trainer, your time and money can easily slip down the drain with very little observable results. Also, working extensively with another trainer has the potential to confuse your dog as to who he/she should actually respond to. When this happens, sometimes dogs who behave very well around the professional trainer act poorly at home when you are in charge.
If you have already made mistakes while attempting to train your dog, or have adopted another dog that has its share of behavior issues, you can still solve those dog training problems by learning the right way to retrain your dog. There are several good dog training programs on-line that teach you step by step the correct ways to train your dog. Every good program that I have reviewed always features positive training techniques. These methods all rely on positive reinforcement -praise and rewards from the trainer (you) when the dog correctly performs the command it is being taught.
