Dog Training Advice – Consistency, its essential. Dogs learn things by means of repetition, this has been clearly established already. So, for you to have any success in controlling your dog or dogs, you need to be CONSISTENT. Yes, this is truly the one most important thing when it comes to dog training. Whether you live alone or have a huge family at home, dog training is essential to maintain peace and harmony, never mind the bank balance. This is essential if you have a family or share your home with other people. You will need to educate the family or other people as well, so that the dog sees a CONSISTENT chain of command. Sounds very military, but I suppose this attitude is required if you want to eliminate bad dog behavior. There is no point in you putting in all the effort to get your dog trained and well behaved, just for the rest of the family to go and ruin it all. This will really make your dog confused as well.
Video Training – Video dog training may be the best alternative to expensive private lessons. Video lessons are much more affordable than hiring a professional trainer, obtainable at a fifth, sixth, or even a tenth of the cost. If you register for an online video dog training course, you will have the accountability of having to complete benchmarks or modules on time. Videos will help demonstrate exactly what you need to do with your dog to train him/her effectively. Plus, you are doing the training by yourself. This helps you to build a bond with your dog and doesn't confuse your dog as to who is actually boss between you or a trainer you hire.
Obedience Training: Now I do not know about you, but I certainly was not born an expert in dog training. So here, I would say its advisable to try and attend some good obedience training classes. This is especially true, if you are a new dog owner or have never really had any professional advice from people that have been doing this on a daily basis. Of course everything you are taught at these classes can be used in your home training. These classes can provide a solid foundation for aspects such as, assuming the alpha position, house training, issuing commands and even managing your older more mature dogs. Once you have the basics there is a wealth of advice, products and knowledge out there from experts in their fields, which will empower you. It may cost a little, but I would rather be penny wise than pound foolish.
Stay Command – The ”Stay” command is a little more challenging than the Sit and Lie Down Commands. It is important to choose the appropriate time during the day to begin working with your dog on the ”Stay” command. Knowing your own dog and recognizing when he is displaying a relaxed or mellow temperament is important. You do not want to begin this training when your dog is excited or overly playful. As with the previous training commands, it is useful to use a treat when teaching the ”Stay” command. To start this training give your dog the sit or lie down command. Once he is sitting or lying down say ”Stay” and hold your hand up as if you were signaling someone to stop. If the dog does not move for 4 or 5 seconds, give him a treat and say ”Good Boy” and pet him. Only give him praise if he stays for the 4 or 5 seconds. If he does not obey your command, try again. Once he gets the idea, increase the amount of time he must ”Stay” before you give him praise. You may have to repeat the ”Stay” command a few times and put your hand in a stop position to encourage him to stay. As he begins to understand, give him the ”Stay” command and slowly back away a few feet, gradually increasing the distance until he masters the ”Stay” command. Remember, it is important to be patient with your dog when training. If training is not successful today, just try again on another day. Patience and persistence is always rewarded.
Intermediate Dog Training – This third type of course is generally known as intermediate dog training. Usually the aim of this training is to reinforce the lessons learned in the basic dog training course but in much greater detail building on the previous skills and experience both the dog owner and the dog have gained.
In my experience, most snags in the dog training process result from miscommunication, not willfulness, stubbornness, or dominance. While this article is geared toward training the family dog, the fact is that whether your dog is strictly a family pet, a competitor in canine sports, or a full-time working dog, getting the most out of your training time means learning to communicate effectively with your dog.
If you are a puppy or dog owner it is natural that you will want a well behaved and well balanced companion that is a joy to have around. No one wants a dog that is continually misbehaving. For a dog to become a well behaved pet and know how it is expected to behave as a member of your household, your dog will need guidance and training from you. For your training to be successful, you must first have a good understanding of the right dog obedience training techniques to use. I highly recommend getting yourself a copy of one of the best on-line dog training books to teach you how to train your dog the right way-and get the results you want, rather than struggle with incorrect training methods that never really work as well as hope.
