Have a plan: As it is true for most things, don't even begin to think about how to build a dog house without a plan. Start with the base in tune with the foundations you have approximated for the dog size (make allowances and build a much bigger dog house than what you expect your dog to grow up to). Similarly, construct or prepare panels for the four edges and make sure that the insides of the panels (the interiors of the kennel) are smooth. Also think of a roof with appropriate vents for air passage.
The second tip in using dog house plans is to consider the size of your dogs and the breed of the dogs. Some breeds of dogs may seem quite small when they are puppies but in fact grow to very large sizes as adult dogs. When you are building a house for such dogs, you can consult with experts such as the local vet nary doctor to give you an estimated average size of your dog as an adult. Building a dog house based on the current size may prove to be frustrating and discouraging later on. This is because the dig may outgrow its house necessitating the house to be brought down and a new one built increasing the costs even further. For other dogs also, they do not grow larger when they are adults but remain the size of small puppies. Building large houses for these dogs only wastes space and often makes them lonely.
In a perfect world, you will be able to keep your dog inside. But sometimes that just isn't possible. Perhaps your dog has outgrown your house, or you have a new baby or an elderly relative moving in that you are worried about your dog being around. In either case, the solution is not to simply cast your dog out into the backyard without any shelter. If your dog has to be outside most of the time, it is important to provide a dog house so your dog can continue to live safely and comfortably. Indeed, even if your dog is allowed in the house, a dog house can still be a good idea if your dog will be spending extended periods outside during the day. In such cases, a dog house will provide shade on sunny days, and warmth on cold days.
