Before purchasing a commercial dog food, check the label carefully. Most commercial food is manufactured with bi-products and poor quality meats. They may even be made with highly processed meats and organs from diseased sources. Processors believe that by heating the foods to extremely high temperatures will kill all the bad things in the food. All this typically ensures is that any nutrients that may have been found in other ingredients is cooked out. One of the best things to look for in a dog food is that it is made from ”human grade” meat ingredients. Simply put, ”human grade” meat used in the dog food could have been served to someone in a restaurant. Most ”cheaper” commercial foods, and some of the more expensive ones, do not use meat that was meant for human consumption. If you wouldn't eat it, why feed it to your best friend?
So how do you prevent kidney disease in your own precious pooch. The answer is simple, only feed a quality food to your dog. Although kidney infection is caused by an ongoing infection or blockage in the urinary tract it can also be brought on by an injury or poisoning. Recurring infections are also a precursor to kidney failure. By feeding a poor quality food that is highly processed with large amounts of fillers like corn, preservatives and chemicals, you are only aggravating an already existing condition. A poor quality dog food diet does not support your dog's overall health and body functions. The inability of a poor food to support your dog's kidney health can potentially lead to kidney failure.
Having a dog is not all about fun and play. Proper nutrition is a key element in the health and long life of your dog. A healthy dog is a happy dog. To maintain a healthy, balanced diet for your dog, you will need good dog food, common sense and a veterinarian. Dogs require six types of nutrients: water, protein, fat, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. Those commercial pet foods billed as 100 percent complete and balanced provide all of a dog's requirements, except water. But all is not what it seems with commercial dog food. Don't short change your dog's health. Provide him with clean, fresh drinking water at all times. Water is the key to a dog's ability to regulate body temperature.

If your dog is already suffering from kidney failure, a prescription dog food that is designed with low protein content, will at least give your dog some comfort for the rest of their life. These dog foods are designed specifically to help replace missing nutritional content which is caused from the damaged kidneys. By lowering the protein content, you lower the amount of urea produced which allows for the amino acids to repair tissue cells. The food is not only low in protein content but includes calcium, vitamin D3 and increased availability of these same nutrients. They also cut out high amounts of carbohydrates which only increase waste production in the urine. These special dog foods also show their quality by leaving out preservatives, chemicals and fillers, unlike the commercial dog foods.
Think about this… have you ever seen your dog enjoy commercial dog food the way he/she enjoys a good meaty bone? I never have and I have had a lot of dogs in my lifetime and through my business care for all different breeds of dogs, sizes and ages. Do you know why? It is because bones are fresh meat, exactly as you purchase them is exactly what you give your dog. However, with commercial dog food some companies may list real meat as their number one ingredient, but they may actually have more fillers, which reduces the ratio of quality ingredients to useless ones. Ingredients, such as peanut hulls, are used for filler or fiber, and have no significant nutritional value. Because the ingredients they are using are not wholesome, their quality may be extremely variable, and the harsh manufacturing practices destroy many of the nutrients the food had to begin with. Cereal grains are the primary ingredients in most commercial pet foods. These are often the result of an allergy or intolerance to pet food ingredients. And to top that off, sometimes a manufacturer may not have added any preservatives, but the meat or other ingredients may have had preservatives added to them by suppliers. So, by the time the food gets to your dogs plate the good quality that may have been slightly present in the beginning has disappeared. And not every batch of dog food is the same because meat by-products and meat and bone meals vary from batch to batch creating an unstable source of nutrition for pets.
Road Kill Is Included In Dog Food Ingredients. Raccoons, skunks, snakes, rats, birds, possums, armadillos, you name it, if it is killed by a car on a highway, it has probably found its way into dog food via the rendering plants. Road crews come by and pick up the animals and then give them to the rendering plants. However, they often don't get to the animals until they've been laying there for a few days or even weeks. The dead animals may have already be half eaten by maggots but off to the rendering plant they will go. The dead animals may be diseased but they are still taken to the rendering plants. None of these animals are tested before they are turned into food for dogs and other products.
