It is also important to keep in mind that your dog didn't become a bad dog overnight. This being the case, you aren't going to change bad behavior overnight either. Even though the end result may not be the docile dog you were hoping for, by remaining consistent throughout the training procedure, your dog will change for the better. By remaining consistent with your approach, you will be surprised at the results. It is almost a certainty that your dog will begin to respond in a positive manner by becoming a better behaved dog.
All the best dog obedience training books stress positive conditioning techniques, and will teach you not only how to actually do the steps of each exercise(sit, stay, etc.), but also give you an understanding of why you are going about the training in this particular way by teaching you how your dog sees things. It is very eye opening to learn how differently dogs see the world than we do. The better you understand your dog's point of view and body language, the easier it will be for you to properly train your dog.
The Sit Command – This is the most common and basic command to teach your dog and probably should be the first thing you teach him. Using a treat as a reward for good behavior works well for most training. You will need a leash attached to your dog's collar to hold him steady. Show your dog a treat that you have in your hand and hold it over his head causing him to look up, and then say ”Sit”. Sometimes, just by holding the treat over his head your dog will automatically sit. If he does not sit, place your other hand on your dog's rear and gently press down saying ”Sit”. Once he does sit, reward him immediately with the treat and praise him by saying ”Good Boy” in a happy voice and pet him vigorously showing him you are pleased with his response to your ”Sit” command. It's important to reward him immediately after he responds correctly, so he knows why he is receiving the reward.
