Crate Training: This type of dog training tool should not be abused, for example when you want time out from your pet dog. Crate training should be used to properly house train your dog. You may also want to familiarize your dog with the crate for those times when he will be travelling with you on a airplane for instance. The idea is to confine the dog to the crate for a short period of time, lets say 1 hour. Upon release from the crate you should take the dog outside to allow him to do his business. If the dog does his business then a reward in the form of a healthy dog treat or lavishing them with affection is in order. Once again, we see here good behavior associated with reward. Quick pointers here, always be at home when using the crate, do not lock the dog in the crate overnight, make sure the dog is comfortable in the crate. Never allow the crate to be seen as a form of punishment for your dog. Dogs react instinctively and as such, should not be shouted at or beaten for doing what comes naturally. Always bear this in mind when your dog has done something which we humans just do not understand. There is usually some good dog reason for doing whatever he has done.
The Lie Down Command – Once your dog has mastered the sit command, you can progress to the ”Lie Down” command. A treat is also used to accomplish this. First ask your dog to ”Sit”. Do not give him a treat for sitting. While he is in the sitting position you should have a treat in your hand and hold it in front of him, very close to the floor and say ”Lie Down”. If necessary place your other hand on your dogs shoulders and gently press down until your dog lies down or give him a gentle tug downward on his leash. Once your dog lies down, reward him immediately with a treat and say ”Good Boy” in a happy voice and pet him vigorously showing him you are pleased with his response to your ”Lie Down” command. The tone of your voice is important to let your pet know you are pleased with his response to your command.
The best training programs always emphasize the need for the trainer to be in charge of the dog, to become the ”Alpha dog”. You will be taught how to use your vocal tones and confident body language to present the right image to the dog being trained.. You must learn how to become the ”Alpha dog” in order to earn your dog's respect, confidence and trust. Once you have learned how to communicate to your dog the right way, and become the Alpha dog, you will find your dog is very eager to follow your lead and to do as you command. Becoming the Alpha leader doesn't mean you have to intimidate or yell or be mean to your pet. Being the Alpha dog is mostly about having and projecting the right attitude to your dog. It is your dog's nature to want to please its alpha leader. If you can establish your self as the leader, you will have no trouble avoiding dog training problems.
