In addition to regular brushing, you should also make sure you keep your dog's nails trimmed–an often overlooked aspect of dog grooming. You will probably want to do this monthly although it will depend on your dog's habits and activities. Make sure you have proper trimmers made for dogs and do not cut them too short. You'll want to stop trimming just before you reach the quick and don't forget to get your dog's dewclaw. Following these routine dog grooming instructions will help maintain your dogs coat and nails but should also be supplemented with a bath.
When you first start out using dog grooming clippers, you don't want your expectations to be too high. Chances are you'll be giving your dog a simple, practical cut rather than styling him like a professional would. Then again, if you do a beautiful job first time out, maybe you should consider a career change! Most people who groom their dogs themselves accept that they're trying to make their dog clean and comfortable, not ready for the show ring. But even if you only use dog grooming clippers to maintain your dog's hair and send him to the groomer every six months or so for a complete workover, you can save hundreds of dollars.
This is how often you should groom your dog if you're asking the question, ”What is the least that I should do for my dog as far as grooming?” However, you may be asking the question, ”Is it possible to bathe my dog too much?” As long as you are using shampoos that are gentle and no harsh chemicals, there is no such thing as bathing or grooming your dog too often. You may bathe your dog as often as you like. Make sure, though, that you use the proper grooming products. For instance, it is really not a good idea to use human shampoo for your dog. Sure it may work to clean his hair, but the levels of pH in human shampoo is stronger than the pH level of doggie shampoo. Therefore, if you continuously use human shampoo on your dog, you can actually give him dry itchy skin.
