Because your goal is to train your dog to behave, the effort you put forth to accomplish this goal will be rewarded by a dog that is much more obedient than when you first started the training lessons. Instead of allowing your dog to frustrate you and possibly end up taking the dog to the pound or, even worse abandoning him, once you have made up your mind to be the master by applying proper dog training techniques to your misbehaving dog, you will be glad you did.
The second command that you must train your dog is NO. This command demands consistency from you, as the trainer, and every member of the household. The NO command need to always be spoken in a sharp guttural tone and alone. Do not use with your dogs name, or in a panicked or high pitched tone that only comes naturally if you were to walk in and see your dog chewing your favorite pair of shoes. Your tone needs to be authoritative sharp and strong to relay your displeasure. Withhold attention as punishment. Consistency is the key to train your dog.
All the best dog obedience training books stress positive conditioning techniques, and will teach you not only how to actually do the steps of each exercise(sit, stay, etc.), but also give you an understanding of why you are going about the training in this particular way by teaching you how your dog sees things. It is very eye opening to learn how differently dogs see the world than we do. The better you understand your dog's point of view and body language, the easier it will be for you to properly train your dog.
