Short training sessions that are around fifteen – twenty minutes have been proven to be the most effective. Lengthy training sessions that go for hours will often make dogs frustrated and lose focus. Try to train your dog about two – three times every day. Remember to revise over previous and learned training once in a while so your dog does not forget. Do not get angry when training your dog if your dog doesn't get things right right away, it'll take practice and you must NEVER punish your dog, this will only have negative consequences for future training and may trigger behavioral problems. Reward your dog with praise or treats when it does the correct thing as this will encourage your dog to want to please you again next time you want your dog to do something.
Communicate confidence. When training your dog, especially a dog new to you or new to training, your movements and body language should give off an air of calm, relaxed confidence. As much as is realistic, remain upright without being rigid. (Remember your facial expression? Your body language should also ”invite learning”.) As a rule, an upright but relaxed posture helps communicate confident authority – an excellent teaching posture. If your body needs to bend, keeping your shoulders relatively back will help maintain a bearing of self-assurance. While this is more important with a dog beginning its training, and with naturally effusive or assertive personalities, any dog can become confused by too much bowing, bending, ducking, and bobbing. He may naturally assume that you are playing, acting submissive, anything but training! Any hand signals associated with commands should be clean, simple and definitive. They should be free from excessive, meaningless motion, and should never be used to threaten or pester the dog.
How Effective is Clicker Training? With proper clicker dog training, tasks that are learned can be recalled by a dog years after the initial training took place, even if no further practice took place. The clicker strategy has been held in such regard, the method was employed by the U.S. Department of Defense in training animals for undercover missions in the 1960s. In a more recent example of its effectiveness, the clicker method was used by one Vermont animal shelter to successfully teach timid cats to act more ”outgoing” when would-be adopters entered the adoption room. By far what may come as the most surprising, you can find a clicker at your local pet store for only about two dollars. While clicker training can be easier than you think, be advised, before you begin working with the clicker make sure to follow the proper techniques. Do not pick up the device and try your best guess at training your dog. Enlist the help of proven clicker dog training strategies to avoid disappointment, and you will be well on your way to training your dog with these proven powerful dog training methods.
